Growth, videos, and seeing barriers for what they really are

Here is a beginning, again

Almost 16 years ago, armed with a 15-minute tutorial, a giant video camera, a microphone, and a tripod, I was tasked with producing videos. They weren’t great (but I don’t think they sucked).

I’ve been thinking of including more video in my posts recently. A recent trip to attend Impower Fund Forum in Monte Carlo would have been a perfect opportunity to include some camera footage and commentary. However, I failed to do so, as I was too busy working to capture some scenes. I told myself I was more comfortable with words anyway. I would spend time crafting what I wanted to say and throw in a witty joke or mixed metaphor (usually, primarily for my amusement).

Self-filmed and edited video isn’t my comfort zone (despite my addiction to TikTok). However, I was inspired by Brittnay Atkins, who posted a TikTok-style video of herself and wrote, “Everything you want is waiting on the other side of cringe.”

The majority of this Substack will be my writing. However, given that it’s summer and you’re all friends, I thought I'd experiment today. Now that it’s 2025, here is my first video again. It can be improved, it may be a bit cringe, but my favourite position will always be ‘there’s room for growth’. (We are only finished at the very end.)

As promised, here is a sing from Whiplash.

Caravan is an American jazz standard by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington, first performed by Ellington in 1936.
